Recognizing that music has always played a significant role in the lives of young adults, LIFEBEAT was established to effectively use the power of music for community engagement. In 1992, the music industry had not yet addressed the AIDS crisis with a unified voice, although many of its members had succumbed to the disease. Bob Caviano, a respected music manager, wrote a moving editorial in Billboard magazine disclosing his illness and challenging the industry to act. Several high-level executives heeded his call and formed LIFEBEAT to harness the influence of the entertainment industry to promote sexual health awareness and safety.
In 2024, LIFEBEAT became a program of The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. Today, LIFEBEAT’s mission continues by collaborating with musical artists and Community Partners from local health organizations to be on-site at partnered shows to provide sexual health and HIV/STI education. Utilizing in-person outreach, broadcast, social media, and print campaigns, LIFEBEAT promotes HIV/STI testing, prevention and treatment, and sexual health resources. LIFEBEAT aims to educate youth at risk of HIV to stay informed and reduce the likelihood of their engagement in risky behaviors regardless of status, gender, or sexuality.
